Landfall CERT
Board of Director’s Meeting
Meeting #113
May 7, 2019

The meeting was called to order by President Bob Mitchell at 1:00 PM., in the COA Board Room   Attending the meeting, in addition to President Mitchell, were Tammy Darazsdi, Michelle Schwieters, Joel Sanders, Terry Reilly, Peter Smoot and Amanda Kranski.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved without comment or correction.

Treasurer Schwieters presented information on the current financial position of CERT.  Of primary interest was the result of last week’s SpringFest which was a financial success.  As of today’s accounting, CERT made $7,667.39 at the event.  There are, however, still a few bills outstanding and the final numbers will be available at the end of May.  In any event, it appears that CERT did very well and exceeded the last SpringFest income by about $700.  We did especially well with the auction this year.

President Mitchell commended Treasurer Schwieters for the preparation of a very detailed and informative income statement spreadsheet that will help us understand the economics of SpringFest for future planning.

CERT has long struggled with attempts to establish our organization as a widely recognized and active entity in Landfall.  At the meeting, Amanda Kranski, wife of CERT member Ed Kranski, presented a well-prepared Power Point presentation to the board describing many ways in which CERT might be able to raise its visibility in the community and provide valuable services.  Mrs. Kranski comes from a fire service background in Florida and has had significant experience organizing and coordinating community events and was very confident that we could raise interest in CERT and grow the organization.

The Power Point presentation included a number of “hot topics” for CERT to consider and the board felt many are viable. A copy of the Power Point slides are attached to these minutes and they are available on line.  The board was impressed with Mrs. Kranski’s thoughtful presentation and enthusiasm and we will attempt to follow through with several of her ideas.

Beyond CERT, Mrs. Kranski would like to establish a run commemorating the 343 firefighters in New York who perished in the 9/11 terrorist attack.  The run would be 3.43 miles and, although open to people outside of Landfall, would hopefully be conducted within Landfall.  CERT could be heavily involved and benefit from its association.  The event would also strengthen the relationship with first responders and elevate CERT’s visibility.

The concept of such an event within Landfall and open to the public might present some security and organizational problems, but it was felt that objections could be overcome for such an important event with a short duration.

Mrs. Kranski presented a video of a similar event held recently in Florida.  It was very inspiring and showed what might be done here.  Her goal is for the event to occur around 9/11 in 2020.

The agenda for this meeting listed a review of SpringFest as an item for discussion.  It is clear that the event and the car show were both very successful.  The weather was perfect and planned programs and events went as expected.  As previously noted, SpringFest was a financial success as well.  However, we are too close to the event to fully discuss all aspects of SpringFest  at this time.  Tammy Darazsdi will be able to fully explain the operation of the event at the next meeting.

The Landfall Foundation has proposed establishing a periodic newcomer’s event to introduce new Landfall residents to organizations and volunteer opportunities in Landfall.  Foundation member Greg Hamelin has offered CERT the ability to participate in such an event.  Hamelin noted that the project is in early development and many factors such as frequency, venue, etc. are under consideration.  The board liked the idea and approved a motion to participate.  As presently conceived, CERT would have 3 to 5 minutes to introduce our organization and its community safety programs.

Old Business

We continue to promote CPR and first aid classes for all Landfall residents and employees as well as ensuring that CERT members are currently certified.  Terry Reilly agreed to research community resources for this training and any  associated cost.  The information will be placed on the CERT WEB site.  It was noted that a Google search would probably provide the same information to interested residents.  We are hoping for a CERT sponsored CPR/first aid class in October.

We have for quite some time had discussions concerning things which CERT members might become involved with in order to provide opportunities for our members.  President Mitchell suggested on focusing on three things.

  1. It is not uncommon to see walkers and joggers on our busy streets moving with traffic and in dark clothing, often in low light conditions, a dangerous combination.  In spite of repeated articles on this issue in The Voice, compliance with basic safety rules is lacking.  Mitchell suggested spending up to $1,500 on safety vests bearing a “courtesy of CERT’ message that could be distributed to people observed in dangerous situations. The board agreed.  President Mitchell will coordinate this effort and will try to find an external sponsor to share the expense.  Such a sponsor would be identified on the vest along with CERT.

  1. A number of CERT members recently took a “Stop the Bleed” program put on by an instructor from New Hanover Hospital.  This life saving concept was felt to be so important that we should promote training of as many Landfall residents as possible.  The program utilizes tourniquets and other methods to save lives. The board thought initial training should be for CERT members and family and subsequently offered to COA and CCL employees if the experience with our members is successful, Joel Sanders will oversee this effort.

  1. Landfall Security Chief Chris Adam has strongly promoted his interest in personal safety in the community.  President Mitchell thought this effort by Chris would be a good chance for CERT to participate in order to help and to gain visibility. Chief Adam has proposed issuing a quarterly flier containing different security information for Landfall residents.  Terry Reilly will meet with Chief Adam to discuss potential topics and how CERT might be able to assist with distribution or otherwise.  The goal of the concept is to keep Landfall safe.

  1. Terry Reilly has been in contact with Porter’s Neck CERT and was impressed with their proactive position with the placement of AEDs (automated external defibrillators) in the community and successful use of the devices.  We already have AEDs in our security vehicles and at several fixed locations around Landfall.  Mr. Reilly suggested deploying a unit at the Arboretum Mail Station.  Although the board felt that the greater distribution of these life-saving devices the better, the postal station might not be the best idea because of potential vandalism or theft.  Nevertheless, we are in favor of having AEDs in safe and useful locations.

New Business

            None.

President Mitchell adjourned the meeting around 2:30PM (I failed to check my watch).

Respectfully submitted,

Peter Smoot, Secretary
